Zimbabwe – A partnership for soil erosion and flood control using the Vetiver System

This post by Graham Dabbs (Igoda Farm) and Bruce Clegg (The Malilangwe Trust) describes a pilot program of soil erosion and flood control on unprotected farmland adjacent to an important wildlife conservancy in the lowveld of Zimbabwe. The conservation work, using the Vetiver System, benefits: (a) the poor, low income, Chitsa farming community, through higher and more secure farm incomes (drought proofing, soil fertility improvement); (b) the adjacent wildlife conservancy by stopping the pre-project sediment flows/flooding from the farmland that was destroying critical grazing areas in the conservancy that are key to the survival of the white rhino and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest; and (c) the owner operator of commercial farm that supplied the vetiver plant material and technical “know how” in vetiver’s application design and management. … Read the rest “Zimbabwe – A partnership for soil erosion and flood control using the Vetiver System”

KENYA’S “MAMA VETIVER”

Jane Wegesa Fraser coordinates the Kenya Vetiver Network. She leads by “doing”.  Jane is one of the founders of PLUS-Kenya, a Kenya NGO now in operation for more than 10 years. From inception she has proven to be the powerhouse in the field, working with communities, designing applications, teaching users, and showing how to actually apply the technology on the ground. The Role Vetiver System can play in helping to achieve Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) “Vision 2050”

Robinson Vanoh and his company, Eagle Vetiver Systems Ltd, is the leader in Vetiver System (VS) applications in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Robinson is also a Board member of TVNI with special responsibilities for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the South Pacific. In this role he is an active Visiting Agent (VA) to a number of VS programs including some in the Solomon Islands, Fiji and Vanuatu. Vetiver Saved My Herd!

Rafael Luque M. owns and operates the Venezuelan bioengineering company Vetiver Antierosión. C.A [email protected]  based on vetiver grass. Part of his business was livestock production. Here follows his story as to how vetiver saved his herd during a period of drought. IICA Webinar “Bioremediation in water and soils in Venezuela”. – Oswaldo Luque presented in Spanish “Compost and Vetiver System” Oswaldo Luque who has been working with vetiver Grass Technology in Venezuela for over 30 years. The use of vetiver as compost and or mulch has been growing in recent years, and is especially important to permaculturalists.
