We have
recently established out of San Jos, Costa Rica, a
Regional Vetiver Network serving Latin America. The
network will be managed by Jim Smyle and Joan Miller;
Joan will act as coordinator. The primary objective of
this regional network is to serve and inform
Spanish-speaking vetiver network users in Latin American.
This will be accomplished to a large degree through the
publication of a newsletter written in Spanish. The
newsletter will allow current users and researchers
involved with vetiver grass to share their knowledge and
experiences with others in the Spanish-speaking world and
extend the appropriate use of vetiver technology for the
conservation of soil, water and rural infrastructure. Through disseminating information and examples from Latin America (as well as other parts of the world) we hope to educate both users and non-users as to the vetiver technology's potentials. We also hope that the Regional Network will serve to increase participation and membership in the worldwide Vetiver Network. The newsletter will be sent free of charge to all those in the Latin American Region who are interested. Additionally, the regional network will function as an information center for all Spanish-speakers needing further information and as a distributor for Spanish-language information (or English where applicable) regarding vetiver grass usage. On a case-by-case basis, the network will also serve to disseminate information on other innovative agricultural and natural resource management technologies in use within or appropriate to Latin America. The Latin American Vetiver Network plans to mail their first newsletter (in Spanish) in early 1996. If you are interested in receiving a copy or would like to contact the network, please e-mail to: [email protected] James Smyle/Joan Miller Vetiver Network Coordinators Apdo. 173-2020 Centro Postal Zapote San Jose, Costa Rica Tel: 506 255 4011 In anticipation of our first mailing we would like to solicit help in the following areas: 1) We need articles from vetiver users in Latin America (in Spanish, please). The newsletter will publish all useful information that you can send us. Where possible, please include photos. We will send your photos back to you if you so request. 2) We need to develop a database of current users who can supply quantities (large or small) of vetiver to new users in search of planting material. PLEASE help us out here and let us know if you have access to material. 3) Perhaps you have noticed that our spanish writing skills are not top quality...if you are interested in volunteering your time to help edit our marginal spanish, please let us know. |
